How much does the EmpowerED program cost?
The EmpowerED program is completely free. You don’t need to pay anything or use any NDIS funding.
Can I be in the program if I don’t have an NDIS plan?
Yes, you can. You don’t need to have any funding or NDIS supports to be in the program.
Do I need to prove my disability?
No, you don’t need to prove that you have any disability or condition. If you identify as living with a disability, you can attend the program.
Can I bring a support person with me?
Yes, you can bring a support person with you. This person can anyone you trust, like a support worker, family member or someone else from your Circle of Trust.
Is this program safe?
Yes, we work hard to make sure that the program is safe. You will never be asked to share anything about yourself or your experiences that you don’t want to. We have a counsellor advocate who you can talk with in private if you want to.
How old do I need to be to attend?
There is no strict age requirement. We usually need consent from a parent or carer if you are under 16 years old. If you are interested, please talk with us.
What do I need to bring?
You don’t need to bring anything. But you are welcome to bring anything that makes you feel safe and happy during the program. We will have fidget toys, snacks and things to do.
Where will the program be?
It is usually held at a disability support service or community building, like a library. We also run programs from our offices in Wonthaggi, Warragul, Bairnsdale or Morwell.
Can I meet the team or go to the building before the program starts?
Yes, you are welcome to meet our team of Peer Educators before the program. You can also come to the place where the program will run. Please get in touch with us so we can make a time that suits you.
What if I don’t understand the program?
Our Peer Educators work hard to make sure that you can understand the topics we talk about. We have books in Plain English or Easy Read for all participants to use and keep.
What if I feel uncomfortable at the program?
We will do all we can to make sure you feel safe and happy. You are free to leave the room and have a break if you need to. Our counsellor advocate is always there to talk with you in a private place if you want to.
Do I have to be a client of Gippsland Centre Against Sexual Assault to do the program?
No, you don’t need to be a client or have experienced sexual harm to do the program. If you are a client, or have experienced sexual harm, we will never ask you to talk about it.
Can I do the program more than once?
Yes, you can. This helps build your learning and we are very happy for you to return.
What’s happens when I’ve finished the program?
You can keep in contact with us and come to any events we hold. If you need info about services, you can also join Connect in Gippsland.
